So here is how it goes.

One of my other website which is a personal blog, is very well indexed for several keywords related to ecchi anime and the list of best ecchi anime. There are tens of keywords that gives hundreds of visitors each day and over all contributes to more than 90% of the total organic traffic to the website.

So one fine morning i was hit by an idea that what if i sell anime dvd’s on this post because it is very well ranked and gives hundreds of visitors each day. I quickly signed up with amazon associates and browse their directory to put relevant ecchi anime dvd’s for sale on the website.

Now i did not place their codes on the entire website, but simply added some of the products right below the posts. That would basically provide an option for the readers to browse and purchase those dvd’s if they wanted to.

Many would go for creating a website to promote affiliate products, that can make you start everything from scratch and put a lot of time and efforts to promote the website in order to generate any sales.

So this is basically like going exactly in a reverse order.

First see for what keywords or phrases is your website ranked number 1 or at least on the first page or the search engines results page.

Use the analytic services or simply AWStats to see what keywords are bringing in good traffic and what articles (pages) are being read more number of times.

Then go for optimizing those posts instead of entire website.

Organic traffic is the best targeted traffic that you can get for your website. If a visitor is coming on your blog post for a searched term then he is probably interested in the content and information. So when you provide them extra services like products to purchase, as an affiliate. Then that can increase your chances of generating sales.

How to possibly get approved in Affiliate program

High website traffic is the basics of monetizing a website. Without traffic you cannot even earn from PPC or CPM advertising.

That is why those huge networks out there will not approve websites with lower traffic or page views.

If your website gets 100,000 unique visitors per month then it is very likely that at least few tens or few hundreds of those visitors would actually be interested in purchasing the product that you are selling. That is why some advertising networks have high requirements because that increases their earning potential.

So that website of mine had a low traffic (I don’t care about traffic on that site) and i thought of joining programs that were specifically into selling Anime DVD’s. But each program had a huge list of requirements and it was very unlikely that my site would get approved.

I knew that i could give them good results being on number 1 position and that is why i mailed them before applying telling them the truth.

I simply told them that my website was not some huge website with billion visitors and generating thousands of sales each day. But what i have is a set of around 15 keywords that ranks my website number 1 or on the first page of the search engine results page and i am looking to monetize those few posts and not the entire website.

I convinced them by giving them the list of keyword that ranked my website on front page, keyword position report from web master central and from analytic as a proof.

I mailed the same to couple of affiliate programs that are into anime and anime dvd’s and as expected i did get a positive response from each of them to apply.

End Results

Since adding those products at the end of the post the reports shows tens of clicks every day.

But frankly, so far it did not generate a single sales (Don’t Laugh, looks like pervs out there are looking for free ecchi).

What i mean is that imagine if it was a PPC network for anime, it would have definitely earned me hundreds of dollars with it getting tens of clicks every day, right?

There are almost negligible amount of Anime advertisers out there and hence contextual advertising never worked out.

So the whole point is, the traffic was limited to few hundreds and it still generated tens of clicks.

Just imagine how good it would work for a niche that has hundreds of advertisers on the site that gets thousands of visitors each day?

Basics of Monetizing a Website

Now why do these guys call themselves small publishers? That’s because their website don’t get enough traffic or else there is nothing like small or big publisher. It is all about the traffic. So the most basic and the only thing that you need to earn money from affiliate marketing or simply from advertising is to get some good organic traffic.

Many newbies ask about creating a landing page for an affiliate and many blog owners have their own ways of earning through affiliate programs but if the site has no good traffic then who would even know about the affiliate product?

So you need to follow the most basic methods of gaining good amount of traffic to your website. You probably know it so in short i would say get some unique content on your website. Provide resources for visitors to download and use. Do social bookmarking for your website to get more readers from external sources. Update your website or a blog regularly to increase returning visitors. Use analytics and other statistics software to track your website peformance to improve it.

For those of you who don’t know what organic traffic is, well its just the traffic that you get through search engines, that matters the most. In order to get good organic traffic just submit your website and XML sitemap to search engines. That way your website will start getting crawled by these engines and your webpages indexed. Also it is important to use right SEO plugins for the CMS that you are using. Use SE optimized titles for your posts and write relevant keywords, descriptions and tags for it.

Once you have good number of traffic and page views. You can start monetizing it. There are several ways of monetizing your website. If you get more page views then go for CPM based advertising.
